Sisters, Toni Noel and Karan Ross, learned firsthand how difficult it was to care for a person with ALS. Toni, a resident of Denver, was the primary caregiver for many years for their mother, Doris Lakner. Karan, who lives in New York, came to Denver often to relieve Toni and help as much as possible, as their mother needed constant assistance. After several months of sharing the care for their mother, Toni and Karan quickly realized the importance of The Chapter's Respite Care Program that helps to pay for qualified care to allow caregivers a much-need break.
In Memory Of their beloved mother, they wanted to “pass it on” by honoring The ALS Association with a Gift of Stock that Sold for more than $49,000! This wonderful tribute will help to make it possible for others to receive all of the services The Chapter provides, but, most importantly, for caregivers to have that much-needed time out. Therefore, this essential care-giving program is now known as The Doris Lakner Respite Care Program.
Toni and Karan challenge others to continue their work by remembering The Association through their own fundraising and financial planning efforts – by hosting a fundraiser, donating a car, through Workplace Giving programs, in a bequest, when selling stock, through charitable gift annuities – the possibilities are endless.
